Unreal Tournament 2003 Gold

September 20th, 2002 by Crusader

The sci-fi multiplayer first-person shooter Unreal Tournament 2003 has gone gold, which translates to it being in stores towards the end of September. The bigger news, however, is this:

Linux Support
The Linux installer is included on Disc 3 of the 3 CD set! We support both client and server for Linux. Unfortunately there’s no mention of Linux on the box because we didn’t know it would be done in time so please tell all your Linux gaming friends that UT2003 is ready for them!

In the meantime, you can still grab the Linux demo (and patch) from here. Thanks to all the people who wrote in with this news.

I’ll still run it under WINEX, though.

Not only has it been included, but it is actually *supported*!

Epic, you’ve really set an example for game developers by including multi-OS support in the box (I know Linux has been done before by other companies, but not of this magnitude). For this, you’ve certainly earned my respect and my money.

You’ve proven that it doesn’t take a big risk to port a game to Linux. Add a little extra coding time, and you expand your audience just a bit more. Thanks a lot!

you have done everything right! Release both linux windows version at the same time, on the same cd. Cant tell you how good that feels right now! Hope there are others to follow. And I will support Epic.

Where’s my credit card? I’m off to buy it!

A linux binary on the CD and support (not that I will ever need it)? Too cool. Someone go poke the guys at Bioware and show ‘em how it’s supposed to be done.

    w00t!

  7. Says:

This is what needs to be done to get Linux to be a viable gaming platform. Nice to see that someone has the balls to support Linux right out of the box unlike some other company *cough* Bioware *cough*

  8. MacSlow Says:

Epic will definitely see my money for their great work. With shipping the binaries on the same CD-set, they currently have surpassed even id Software. Not that it is a huge problem to download game-clients from the net, but still it sets a very nice example of how things can work.

All that’s left are the content-creation tools, but this can take some time according to Ryan C. “icculus” Gordan.

    Best regards…

    MacSlow

P.S.: With the two major game-engine developers now natively supporting Linux, it would be nice to see stuff like “Deus Ex 2″, “Unreal 2″, future titles form Raven etc. also coming to Linux in this manner.

I’m deffinately buying this game. If I was still a windows gamer I wouldn’t however.(unless some great MOD came out) I would buy MOH and Battlefield 1942 instead, I like these kind of multiplayer experiences better. (which is why I like tribes2 and wolfmp so much) I’m disappointed they took out my favorite ut game type. The objective based ones. But anyway since I’m a linux gamer my choices are limited. So you get my ~$50 epic, especially with the Linux client included in box, good show.

  10. PJ_Hooker Says:

    Thanks for porting this, icculus.

I’ll be purchasing my copy of UT2K3 from Tuxgames. :)

  11. Says:

Thanks Epic for doing the right thing. I will be buying it for the Linux version. Epic, please be wary of whatever Microsoft will try to do to you for officially supporting a Linux version in the box. Again thanks!

  12. Says:

Email Epic when you buy the game and tell them that you bought it for linux not windows.
    Also thank them

  13. jonabbey Says:

Thanks to everyone at Epic. I’d buy it even if I had no intention of ever playing it, just to support the platform, but UT2003 rocks so hard no arm twisting of any kind is necessary.

    Merçi mille fois.

  14. mrluisp Says:

Honestly, Thank you, and I am greatly impressed.

I am just so amazed by the guys at Epic. What’s really cool is that didn’t give us any false hopes. They didn’t confirm a Linuz release until they actually released one. Now, we not only get the Linux bins on the CD, but official support.

I don’t know what to say other than thank you Epic, Daniel, Icculus, and everyone else involved with this.

  15. nailer Says:

and recommending it to everyone I knwo who uses Linux. Yay Epic :). Thanks.

With an Athlon 1GHz, 384MB RAM and Geforce2 GTS, I was only getting about 5-10 fps in the demo on with any resolution/colordepth. The problem was that AGP wasn’t enabled, so this is just a heads up for those who have seen the same behaviour. If you run “glxinfo | grep renderer” and it says PCI instead of AGP, then that’s the first thing to fix.

hooray! now that we actually have a high-end game like ut2k3 coming out, hopefully more organizations will follow suit. however, we must also deal with the sometimes sketchy underworld of driver support. i’m running an older card (ati radeon ve -> dual head; 64meg sdram). unfortunately, whenever i start the game, it quickly exits back to my desktop. does anyone know if ati is going to fix their drivers anytime soon? hmmm…i could always load win2k on my box…NAHHHH!

  18. Says:

Do the newest ATi R200 drivers run Ut2k3?

  19. Says:

When do we get MacOS X support? Pff!

Oh well, I’ll buy it now and one of two things will happen: My intel linux box will get rebuilt, or OSX support will come around.. Either way I’ll register it as a linux sale :)

  20. bishop7 Says:

I have purchased the game through Tuxgames (well, pre-ordered actually. Heh heh) Anyone have experience pre-ordering from these guys? Does it take longer for them to get a game after it’s released in stores? If so, how much longer? A week? A month?
