UT2003 Client In Development

August 30th, 2002 by Crusader

In a recent IRC chat with Epic’s Mark Rein, Rein states that a Linux client port of Unreal Tournament 2003, the sequel to Unreal Tournament (long playable natively on Linux), is in development:

[21:13] <[LEGION]Cypress> MarkRein[Epic]–> I am sure you heard this 100x.. but have you heard anything about Playing UT2003 on Linux??

[21:14] <MarkRein[Epic]> [LEGION]Cypress–> It is in the works

Previously, Epic had indicated they would be open to producing a client port, but the server port had been the initial priority.

    Sweet !!!!

If you are reading this…anyone from Epic, please release the Linux client at the same time as the Windows client and ON THE DISK. Stop treating Linux users as second class cyber citizens.

  5. Starbuck Zero Says:

will be on the same CD as the Win32 client. I think Epic better try to do the same thing, but then again that’s just me.

  6. slinger Says:

I guess I will buy UT 2003 after all

    This is excellent news.

Considering they were/are using DirectX, I guess this means they’re making a native port using OpenGL or they’re using wine/winex. I really hope it’s not going to be using wine/wineX. Anyways, this is still great news. Thanks Epic!

    From the blatant hypocrisy department:

If they’d spent all that time porting instead of chatting on IRC they’d be done by now.

  9. Says:

The port will most definitely be using WINE.

  10. Says:

    What about this:

Wait till the linux client is ready and buy it from tuxgames, then they will know the sales figures.

Hmmmmmmm, you can’t wait, well, don’t be so annoying….

  11. Says:

    …while I prepare a statement.

    *ahem*

    “Yay.”

Well, mabye. I wish they wouldn’t do this crap over IRC — thats just not very offical. If they had a page on their company site that said “Yes, there will be a linux port” I’d be a lot more inclined to believe it. Just strikes me as odd they would keep the linux version hidden until the irc sessions. Makes me think only one guy is plugging away at this if that and it also makes me think its going to be unoffical.

Mind you, they did port part 1 so I’m less cynical then usual about this. Mabye we’ll be fragging windows users before to long. ;)

  13. Says:

IMHO, they should spend their time to make WineX even better, then they would never need to port anything.

    Just my $0.02.

  14. Says:

    Yipee no wine compromises :)

No, I best not get my hopes up until it’s real.

  15. Says:

    Hell Yeah.. NATIVE UT2003…
This is the way god intended it to be :-)

They use our linux server so ther costomers will be able to play online…. ??

Why sould i run a server of any sort if i can’t use it? Server port only is insulting.

Client and server sould be at equal priority
beause one dont work without the other.

BioWare has promised a Linux client (of NWN) for months now and has delivered nothing but a single screenshot. While I still maintain hope that they will _eventually_ release the client, I think Epic’s stance here is even more dodgy and will likely have an even worse outcome. I’m guessing we’ll see DOOM 3 before UT2003 on Linux (UT2003 is expected to ship 10/01/2002 and DOOM3 is probably going to be more like 04/01/2003)

I’m not trying to attack Epic at all as I still approve of their decision to port the game, but I’m just trying to say that this news really may be a bit of a mixed blessing. I actually find that I rest better knowing theres no port on the way than waiting for a port thats 6 months overdue :)

And btw, the wine debates are NOT appropriate here. Knock it off.

NWN, Doom 3, Tribes 2 patch and now UT2003. There’s already more creamy gaming goodness on Linux than I can possibly play with. Looks like I’ll be giving up sleeping in 2003.
