New Kyro linux drivers
August 24th, 2002 by JudeccaCatonga sent in word that Imagination Technologies has released new Kyro Linux drivers.
The Imagination Technologies Linux Driver kit provides 2D and 3Dacceleration for PowerVR KYRO family of graphics chips running in 16 and 32 bpp depths. The drivers are based on the standard DRI mechanism shipped with XFree86 > 4.0.

The biggest benefit of using these drivers is that they now have XV support. Near DVD quality DivX5 files now only produce 4% CPU load during playback when using MPlayer. I’ve tested this wil all of the freebies on divx.com. I am going to try many other formats too. So far, the results are great. 3D performance is great, as usual. If you need a cheap GF2-level card for Linux, pick up a Kyro 2. My experiences have been great, so far.

Hmmm… is this not the same PowerVR that’s in the Dreamcast ? If so, does this not have REALLY groovey implications from Dreamcast Linux ?

Any of you guys can compare these drivers with windows drivers?

They better opensource the drivers using the GPL. All the fun and feature additions happen when drivers are under the GPL. Look at the Voodoo2 graphics adaptor for instance…They can now be used under XFree86-4.2.0 in 2D mode as more monitors or let other people with additional USB/FireWire input peripherals use Linux at the same time.
If anything, it would be nice to see a company like PowerVR/ST or ATI to release a quad video AGP-based adaptor. I like how Xree86-4.2.0 uses Glide to output the X11 2D graphics on my four 8MB Voodoo2 adaptors. We need more GPL’d drivers because that is what attracts new people and companies to utilize and invest Linux features.

Thank them for the linux driver and ask them to open-source it. Also, explain them why they should :)
