Aliens vs. Predator 2 Linux Server

February 24th, 2002 by michael

Ant let us know that Monolith announced a Linux server for Aliens vs. Predator 2.

We’re also preparing to open our Linux servers to the public for play. These will be indicated by [LXBETA] after the server name. Assuming all goes well, we’ll have the Linux servers available a few weeks later. The Linux server will be compatible with 1.0.9.4, so once you’ve got 1.0.9.4, feel free to stop by the beta servers and play. We’ve set up an email for Linux bugs: avp2linuxbetabugs@lith.com.

Please do not support this game by running a Linux server until a Linux client is available.

    Ditto.
Or, run a server with the Name “No Windows Clients until Linux gets a client”. Or something more clever to voice our desire for a Linux Client. If we clog the Master Server with Linux servers, our message might get noticed.

Fox doesn’t care if you run a server or not because you want a client port. Game companies make Linux servers for ISPs and Windows gamers, no one else. Personally, I’m all for it. The more people a company has to devote to making a Linux server, the better the chances are that their development staff will get hooked on Linux.

Which games have server binaries with out clients? I can think of Half Life and AVP2 of course. What else? I would like to get a few running.
