This isn’t important enough to include in the main news post, but I thought I’d mention that I installed 4.2.0 from the Rawhide source RPM and so far it is working fine for me.

…initial support for Radeon 7500/8500 line of cards. The release notes state that the 7500 has both 2D and 3D acceleration, while the 8500 having only 2D. One can only hope 3D support for the 8500 follows shortly. :) Recently I purchased an 8500 to add support for some of it’s feature for a game I’m developing with a few friends. Only problem is, I have to use Wintendo :/ It’s a damn nice card and I really hope ATI will be open enough to get us some kick ass drivers (i.e. All the new OpenGL extensions for the programmable vertex and fragment pipeline on the 8500/7500 GPU’s).

I’ve got a Radeon 64MB DDR, and while it works fine, there’s one problem – if I start X, then exit, and start it again, the system freezes. *boom* Totally dead. No telnet, no ssh, nothing in the logs. The changelog for XFree 4.2.0 mentioned that Radeon freezes were removed, yet after upgrading I still have the *exact* same problem.

So, it looks like it’s a problem with the kernel modules, but I’ve already upgraded those to the latest as well… Is anybody else having this problem? I’ve heard that some hardware problems can stem from the AMD IronGate AGP bridge, but I don’t know of any that specifically affect the Radeon. Is this a well known problem or is it just something fawked up on my machine?

I have a Radeon 64 DDR. I use XFree 4.1.0 for my 3D. Does the 4.2.0 release add support for the T&L? I have had problems getting 32 bit color out of my card too (24 bit plays havoc on Unreal Tournament’s compressed textures). Is 4.2.0 a worthwhile upgrade for Original Radeon owners? The release notes don’t mention the older Radeons.

I think I am just going to wait until the fine debian folks make the packages.
I am using nvidia card and I don’t see any exciting new features in this release.
But maybe there are better drivers for my laptop with a savage pro.

But a serious observation.
How many nVidia complaints have we seen thusly far?
How many ATI complaints have we seen thusly far?

Perhaps the Radeon is technically faster than the GFIII. But I don’t know that, since the ATI doesn’t actually function correctly most of the time.

I also have 4.2 working on Mandrake 8.1 with the rawhide rpms. The upgrade does seem to improve my 2d performance on my GeForce 2 MX 400 (latest NVidia drivers as well). Most notible was performance on XMMS vis plugins startup went from 15 sec start time to about 5 and fps doubled. I don’t know about you, but the upgrade helped me.

I just upgraded from 4.1.0 to 4.2.0 and everything works fine unless it uses OpenGL. Any application that tries to use OpenGL crashes with a Seg Fault. I even tried rebuilding the NVIDIA “Source RPMs” for both the kernel and the GLX module and restarted X and my machine (it had an uptime of 15 days :-( ) to no avail. I’m using RedHat 7.2. I hope either NVIDIA or XFree86 resolves this problem sooner than later.

Hi, i just got slackware linux 8.0. I’ve upgraded t teh new kernel and 4.2 version of xfree. I have a P3 1000 with 512 ram and and nice 64 ddr radeon card that just doesn;t work. I cant even change my refresh rate(which is stuck @60) now i’m a linux newbie, and dunno my way around to well. i’d aprreicate any feedback on how to make this car work cause i cna’t even look at my monitor in linux right now.
