Quake is GPL, this guy can do nothing to change that other than license the Quake source for a large sum of money. Considering that Quake has been available in source form and working with non-Glide cards for almost 2 years, I have a hard time believing he licensed Quake just for that. He is legally required to release source. This has all been done before (http://www.kev.pulo.com.au/quake/qlfiles/) and it is something that doesn't need to be repeated. However, I'm guessing that just as this guy seems to be unaware of the existence of QuakeForge, he's also unaware of his legal obligations. I'm sure someone will inform him, even though no one really needs this source (or this binary) for anything.

Wow I get 85.6 fps with this binary! It looks just like the old glide glquake. Great! I of course have QuakeForge's latest and greatest (ok, well it's pretty new) but this old glquake might really work better for Team Fortress than QuakeForge does. Custom TF is still a really fun multiplayer mod for Quake 1 with all its strange gadgets and whatnot. Also, QuakeForge lacks menus of any kind and only has the console while this binary has menus.

Note: don't run this from your QuakeForge dir or it might eat your config.cfg files if it runs. Instead make real dirs glquake/id1 and then symlink your pak's into this directory. Seems to work fine with my GeForce2MX board.

> Video mode 1024x768 initialized.
> This Version of Quake has been hacked by mfcn <mfcn@gmx.de> ;-)
> PackFile: ./id1/pak0.pak : gfx/conback.lmp

Ran "timedemo demo1" from the console.
...
> You got the gold key
> PackFile: ./id1/pak0.pak : gfx/loading.lmp
> 969 frames 11.3 seconds 85.6 fps

I've been using Linux for a couple of years now but I'm still pretty uninformed on how to do certain things.

I tried for about a day to get quakeforge to work fullscreen and in GL mode and never had any luck.

I got the quake-sdl, quake-x11, and quake-svga binaries all up in running and they all look like crap as if running in software mode.

This binary worked great for me on the first try.

Can someone explain step by step how to compile Quakeforge for GL hardware? If you can, I'll ditch this binary and go ahead with quakeforge. If not, I'm stuck with it. The same way I have to use the q2-hack thing for Quake 2.

For the record, I'm using Nvidia drivers with SGI glut libs installed (the rpm).

Thanks for the help with Quakeforge (if anyone can help me compile it with GL).

Quakforge, bleh. That hunk of junk? Use Project Twilight :>
http://twilight.sf.net/

It's *MUCH* faster than QuakeForge already, and the next release will even be faster!

I've had nothing but problems with the quakeforge releases.
The .3 release has no standard gameplay mode and current dev release (.5) has the nq binaries for the standard game, but it doesn't work correctly.. Maps and models aren't lighted correctly or are BLACK. and the models don't even appear all the time.. Plus the MEnu is GONE.. the only GOOD thing about quakeforge is that the config files are stored the my HOME directory..

Well screw it.

I still cant get a gl version of Quakeforge compiled and this is why I thought that this binary of Quake 1 GLX was such a good thing.

I guess Alkini can make fun of me of he wants. 8^)

Hey, so much QuakeForge and so little twilight.
You people need to take a ride over to http://twilight.sf.net/
It's much faster than QF, and even works on win32 if you're in to that sort of thing. We'll be releasing 0.2.0 sometime soon, if I'm not mistaken.
