November 30th, 2001 by AlkiniKarl T wrote in to let us know that he recently mailed the PowerVR team to ask about the status status of the Kyro driver. Kristof Beets of PowerVR responded to his mail with:

and by that time the card will be outdated. But at least we can hope that the driver will be open source soo that support can live on !

Now is the time everyone should be lobbying PowerVR extremely hard to OS their drivers. PowerVR is really waffling on this one so let’s do our best to help them make up their minds! ;-)

Will there be any new Kyro cards? If the card is either better than what Nvidia and ATI or offering or the card is nearly as good and has open source drivers i’d definitely get a Kyro instead. Right now I’ve got a GF2Ultra which should still last a good deal longer before I “need” a new card.

I held off buying a kyro based card for ~4 months hoping that linux drivers would be released so I could replace my aging ati 3d rage pro. In the end they lost a sale as I decided to wait no longer and bought a nvidia geforce2 based card instead – and so far I am very happy with it…

Unless they are planning to also support their kyro 3 with these drivers, it’s way too late. These drivers won’t be done in Febuary, they’ll be ALPHA in Febuary. The card is already a year old, and by the time the drivers are final, it’ll be 2 years old.
