Exult Beta Released

November 29th, 2001 by michael

Jeff Freedman of the Exult project wrote in to let us know that Exult has reached its first Beta.

Users should now be able to play both ‘Black Gate’ and ‘Serpent Isle’to completion, provided you have the data files from the original game.

During the Beta period, we will continue to fix bugs in preparation for a1.00 release; and we will also continue development on ExultStudio, whichprovides a map-editor and script compiler that will allow users to modify U7and (eventually) create new games.

Exult is available from http://exult.sourceforge.net/download.php

As an aside, I’ve been following Exult for some time now, and consider it a really great project. I’ll be getting out my Ultima 7 disc this evening to try it out.

Works great! Can’t wait for the editor to be finished.

What a fantastic effort by the Exult team. I know a couple of guys who worked QA on Ultima 7 for Origin here in Austin and who have long lamented the loss of the original Ultima 7 source code. If it weren’t for Exult, Ultima 7 would be all but impossible to play for anyone today.

One of the single best examples of archaeological reverse engineering on the net. Fantastic.

I’ve been following this one for quite a while, and I am really impressed with it.

Not only does this let me play my all-time favorite games on Linux, but eventually it will be possible to create brand new games using Exult Studio, which would then be playable under Windows, Mac, Linux, and BeOS.

The Black Gate is probably my favorite RPG ever, and I started Serpent Isle and enjoyed it, but never finished because when I got a newer machine it became unplayable (sad, huh?). If this really works, I’ll be busting out the old CD and putting in some good ol’ U7 time.
