Return To Castle Wolfenstein Linux Binary Released

November 27th, 2001 by michael

id Software has released the multiplayer Linux binary for Return To Castle Wolfenstein. The announcement was made in Christian Antkow’s .plan file. Big ups to Timothee Besset. The 4.57M download is available at:

ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/wolf/linux/wolfmp-linux-1.0.b2.x86.run.

Disclosure: I am an employee of Activision, Inc.

Here are the install notes:

This setup will install the linux binaries for Wolfenstein Multiplayer in /usr/local/games/wolfenstein (or any other location you request). It WON’T INSTALL ALL THE FILES REQUIRED TO RUN WOLFENSTEIN MULTIPLAYER. You will need to manually copy a number of files to the /usr/local/games/wolfenstein/main directory.

From a win32 Wolfenstein installation, copy the following files to your /usr/local/games/wolfenstein/main directory:

63211149 Nov 13 22:14 mp_pak0.pk3
4449596 Nov 13 13:45 mp_pak1.pk3
1118 Nov 13 16:59 mp_pak2.pk3
315823656 Nov 13 12:50 pak0.pk3
293887431 Nov 12 17:20 sp_pak1.pk3
11026123 Nov 12 17:27 sp_pak2.pk3

ENTERING THE CD-KEY:

The first time you run the game, you will need to go to ‘Options’, and click on ‘Enter CD Key’ button. Enter the CD key (it’s on your CD Jewel case).

NOTE: you don’t need to give a CD key if you are installing a dedicated server.

SINGLE PLAYER:

This release doesn’t contain the single player binaries of the game. The menu command to switch to single player is present in the interface, but it is completely inoperant.

Useful files in this installation:

- see CHANGES for a summary of wolfenstein linux changes
- see QUICKSTART for quick instructions to configure your dedicated server
- see Docs/Dedicated Server Notes.html for more dedicated server information

    makes me want to cry!

  2. clump Says:

I will purchase this game now.

  3. Says:

I will definatly get this game as soon as I see it now. I have already downloaded it to make sure that I get my download regestered in there ftp server.

  4. Says:

For those worrying about it, getting the pk3 files from the setup using wine is pretty painless I ran into no hitches (although if you have a Windows install copying the files from there is still easier). The game rocks! I hope the SP gets finished soon.

Anyone heard anything about a dedicated server yet? Way too many MP Test2 servers out there yet.

  5. crudman Says:

Many thanks to Timothee Besset for his efforts.

  6. soichiro Says:

How to copy those files?COPY WHAT?There is only a setup.exe in the CD!Why don’t they make a installer like Unreal Tournament?

  7. XWRed1 Says:

I’m glad this is finally done. Just in time for a big lanparty this weekend.

Now I just need to go out and buy the game.

  8. Says:

    Good game!

  9. Says:

Why not actually make it *easy* to install under Linux? It’s great that the binaries are there, but it would be nice to make it somewhat reasonable to install; it sucks to have to get Wine working before I can actually play it, and where are the single player bins?

  10. Says:

Multiplayer… it’s just stressful and competitive.

  11. Starbuck Zero Says:

but I don’t see why Id and Activision are making us go through this. What did we ever do to them? Why not make it a very newbie like installer? They can use Loki setup tools if they want… Hell it’s free for crying out loud! I always said be happy with what you get, but I know for a fact that they could have don’t better with the install.

P.S: I never seen the installer for RTCW and I have no idea how it looks.

  12. kmp Says:

Is anyone else getting this? Its not returning with any servers, I wonder if the master server is down?

  13. Says:

The installer that installs the Linux binaries uses Loki software’s Linux installer. The files that contain the game content (the pk3 files) are compressed on the CD along with the executables for Windows. They did this to make the whole game fit onto one CD (they even dumped some MP maps to save space). To get the pk3 files out of the Setup.exe you must have installed the game under Windows or use Wine. I have looked at the setup file and it’s apparently using a proprietary compression scheme so trying to decompress it another way doesn’t seem to be possible.

In short if it chaps your hide to have to copy files from Windows or using Wine to get the files to play the game, don’t buy it! But you should at least give props to TTimo for doing the port in the first place.

Or, here’s an idea, you can bitch and moan about it until Id regrets giving binaries to the Linux community at all and stops doing it. That way you can go back to bitching and moaning over having to boot to Windows to play games or *gasp* using Wine! The horror.

  14. Trizt Says:

Damn, it’s great… Have played RTCW unde wine, and it was all ok, but now with real binaries it’s really great, the game of the year for Linux. Now I’m waiting for the SP for Linux, it’s a little bit difficult to play without sound (wine and sp = no sound).

  15. Says:

    Great job TTimo!

My weekend is ruined now… ;)

  16. DJKAOS Says:

Where are all those pak. files?
    I only can find mp_pak0.pk3

does this only work for the full version of the game?
I have the windows muliplayer Test?.

  17. Limbomaniac Says:

    Mwoehahahahahahahahahahaha,

Thoase stupid Linux-users, they have to pay the whole price for half the game.

Yeah right, Linux is not good for the commerce.

ID, why didn’t you put the Linux binaries on the same disc as the Wintendo ones like StarOffice and other companies can do.

No, you have to pay for it, because you can’t play with the keys from keygenerators in the multiplayer version.

So, there binaries are just a hoax, half the product for the whole price.

Hehehehehehehe, I’ll wait just a few months and get it for 2 cents at the discount………….

  18. kmp Says:

    Thanks Timothee! It’s working great!

  19. Says:

what compression format is used on the windows cd? Has anyone ever tried to get the pk3 files out of the .exe with cabextract?
What compression is used on the mac? If it’s easier to get the files from the mac cd I would rather buy that version then.

  20. PJ_Hooker Says:

Thanks for the work so far on the port. I think it’s great that you’re trying to support Linux. But I still don’t plan to buy this until TuxGames starts carrying it.

  21. hum Says:

The MP binary is available even before the game is out here in Singapore.

Hope the SP binary will be out soon, so that I can play the game straight away when I purchase it. (I do wonder when it’ll arrive here)

    Thanks TTimo!

  22. dedboyctl Says:

This game rocks, can’t wait till the SP binary’s come out.

  23. Lovechild Says:

Now I know what I want for Xmas… I’m asking the gf for RTCW and then… Ohh God, I’ll lock myself in my room for a week straight..

ID, thank you SOO much – Linux ports are rare, especially games of this quality.

    nuff love

  24. Limbomaniac Says:

Like I said a week ago, there is no SP and I think there won’t be

BTW, when the SP is out, I buy it, not earlier…..
