LINUXGAMES

RTCW SITREP

November 27th, 2001 by Crusader

id Software’s Todd Hollenshead updated his.plan with brief news about the Linuxbinaries for the recently releasedReturn to Castle Wolfenstein:

Return to Castle Wolfenstein should be on shelves across Europe (except forSpain and Italy) by this coming Friday. Spain and Italy will get theirsthe following Friday. I’m still waiting on info for Asia/Pacific.

Other news:

Mac is still “soon” (i.e., before Christmas) and the Linux binary release is”sooner”. So don’t harass Timo and Graeme too much – they’re working hard.

Timothee “TTimo” Besset also let us know that the initial release will just be for multiplayer (asRTCW uses separate executables for the single and multiplayer games); moreover, as the CD does nothave the pakfiles as stand-alone files, you’ll have to initially install the game to your Linux machine viaWine or Win32 proper.

guess i’m still using wine for a little while then, kinda sucks, Can’t wait to see All the linux binaries released

  2. Says:

My guess is that the MP binary is easier to port than the SP anyway. Wine appears to be good for something after all.

  3. Says:

I wouldn’t buy this from Tux Games or any other store if the process involved Wine or having to install Windows only for this.

  4. Says:

When will Tuxgames start shipping? As soon as the multiplayer binaries out or when single player is done or wait for an installer?

  5. MyAss Says:

Maybe tuxgames will extract the pak files and put them on the cd with the linux binary… That would be really cool, not sure if that would be kosher leagally tho….

  6. Says:

there would be a linux friendly cd.. perhaps the mac cd?.. i’ll wait for that. well actually i’m waiting for the single player binaries, i have no need for muliplayer atm.

  7. bobcat Says:

There’s gotta be “UNPAK” code out there somewhere. Isn’t there a Q3 editor? Radiant or something? Can’t that unPAK the files? (I really don’t know as I don’t do Quake 3).

  8. Says:

If it helps the developers to save a few bucks so that they can _actually_ make a port to linux, that should be far better than the other option, the game not being ported what so ever.

Think about that before you fuzz about all the (in this case [my opinion] ) good choices. :p

Maybe it is not just Wine people whine about, but whinning in general?

    cheers

check out Annihilation mod for Quake 3 if you’d like to play RtCW native.

Yep, waiting for info on Asia/Pacific too. It’s not that much of a logistical challenge to send shipments to ‘Van Diemen’s Land’ these days, it’s avoiding the dwelling sea monsters which is the difficult part.

  11. PJ_Hooker Says:

I won’t buy this until TuxGames can carry it.

… wrapping up the whole game. I just wonder why it was decided to pack the game up like it is packed up now. Why didn’t they stick to the structure of Q3A. What’s so bad about that? IMHO this would make the whole platform-independent approach much more complete.

Nevertheless I am looking forward for the complete native Linux-version of RTCW! Keep up the good work Timo and Graeme!!!

    Best regards…

While the SP-Bins are not out yet, how am I able to play it using Wine? I allways get an error, who tells me that Wolf wasn’t able to load the OpenGL Subsystem. Any ideas?

    Mandrake 8, Athlon 1,2Ghz, GeForce 2MX.

    Thanks,
