3Dlabs’ OpenGL 2.0 Presentation
September 30th, 2001 by CrusaderDuring the last OpenGLArchitectural Review Board meeting(notes)3Dlabs proposed the creation of an OpenGL 2.0 spec, in order”to take a decisive step” towards advancing the API. Their presentation (inPDF format) can be found at

Thanks to Tomas Blaha for the heads up.

This is really great. OpenGL does kinda need the proposed changes. Also, 3DLabs participation and eagerness to contribute patented technology royalty-free is great compared to the moronic W3C proposal we’ve all heard so much about. At least some companies, like 3DLabs, don’t have their heads shoved up their rear along with their pocketbooks…
I wonder how well teh OpenGL board will see this, though. Just one of the proposed changes, memory management, was completely shot down when Tim Sweeney of Epic proposed it, although I don’t think he had both a drawn-out plan or corporate backing like this proposal does.
I suppose we’ll just have to see how it goes. ^,^

Where is the Accelerated Mesa3D openGL drivers for the Glint 300SX+Delta, Glint 500TX+Delta, and Glint MX+Delta? The 300SX+Delta was being independently developed by some people in NASA, 5 years ago, but it stopped when they decided to move on to developing for the 500TX+Delta; which in-turn didn’t make any progress. Nobody GPL’d the code and made it available for download, BTW… Glint MX+Delta needs to be supported in XFree86 4.1 DRI, but it isn’t; The Glint MX+Gamma is in its place.[br][br] I’ve pushed 3DLabs products for the past 3 years because of their performance and stability, which most of which inherently exists only in MS Windows. For people with older computer systems, Pentium 200MHz-rated systems for example, it is a little pointless to convince people to *downgrade to Linux because nobody ported the Hardware-based openGL 1.x acceleration libraries to Linux. Who wants to move down from Hardware-accelerated openGL in Windows95? So far, the 3DLabs Glint MX + Gamma is supported. Many, countless computers are still using a Glint 500TX+Delta and many more are using Glint MX + Delta. So what’s up with that? Nobody is going to pay $200 worth of goatmilk to xi graphics for their software…

Does anyone know if Jon Carmack has posted any comments
on this proposal, it certainly seems to fit in well with
his vision of generic graphics accelerators.
