Linux Return to Castle Wolfenstein MP Test Client

September 22nd, 2001 by Crusader

The Linux client for the Return to Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer test has been released by id Software. The version 0.7.16-1 client install can be downloaded in full (65MB), or minus the pakfile (for those who installed the Win32 version in Linux with Wine). Presumably the Linux RTCW FAQ page will be updated with whatever issues players encounter with the test; the test includes one Normandy-inspired level which pits the Allies against the Axis as they fight over war plans.

  6. Says:

Could it be possible that someone who already got the package out could make it available until ID’s ftp-site is usable again? Pliiz!

  8. Says:

I downloaded the linux file installed it and tried to start a game. I get this error:

Couldn’t open streaming sound file sound/music/wolf3.wav

the file isn’t in the pak0.pak file neither windows or linux version.

  9. Says:

Why do the Allied soldiens have american accents? The lack of authenticity jars!

(And don’t get me started on those German accents… they sound Dutch or something… ;-) )

  10. Says:

    I get the following comment:

    ***********************************************************
You are using software Mesa (no hardware acceleration)!
    Driver DLL used: libGL.so
    If this is intentional, add
    “+set r_allowSoftwareGL 1″
to the command line when starting the game.
    ***********************************************************

As you can imagine, software endering sux… Does anyone know how should enable my Matrox G400?

  11. Says:

I remember that only a few days ago people actually wondered it a linux client will ever be released…

  12. Says:

This is truly a good day in the land of Linux. The latest greatest FPS multiplayer test client for Linux, and kernel 2.4.10. Games and kernel updates, what more can you ask for? ;-)

  13. Says:

has anyone had experience with rtcw only running in about a quarter of the display? (even though it is set to be running at 640 x 480, fullscreen).

  14. Logy Says:

I’m not normally the kind to gush over a particular company, but dammit, I’ll gladly bear Timothee Besset’s children whilst shouting the praises of id from the mountain tops.

Even the joystick works! (It doesn’t on the Wind’ohs client.)

  15. Says:

I just experience crashes, hangs, and high use of mem and cpu that eventually causes a hang. I’ve tried all nvidia drivers since 1251 too. Anyone else experiencing this stuff? I even considered my AA fonts playing apart so I turned them off but still no help. I always get the hangs when i try to start my own server and client from within the game and it hangs most of the time when I try to join a server or if I try to reload the main menu more than twice.

  16. Says:

I’ve been testing a little on both linux and windows. I must say that linux gives the best performance by far.

PS Is there gonna be a way that I can buy this game, but then make sure ID know I only bought it for the linux support?

I got a strange problem with Tribes or my Nvivia driver.
I’m using version 0.9.6 or something in general and then I dont have any problem.
The problem is when I upgrade to new driver 1.0-1512. The framerate is
mush faster so I want to use this driver, but it’s very unstable both when I
play games and in X. When it hangs I get a singel white pixel in the top left corner.
Then I tried the newest drivers(1.0-1541 or something dont remerber the versin of the current driver).
Anyway Now X is stable and all games run very good but not Tribes. Tribes hangs
100% of the time. I get the white pixel, the same thing as before. What can I do?[br][br]

    HARDWARE:
amdK6-500 128mbram, geforce2 32mbram, Mandrake 8.0(kde2.2 is the only change I have done to the installation)
    SoundBlaster card.

Yes. I really liked this test and right now I can’t think of anything but playing it. However I am really disappointted about the information I keep getting from the net.

The best thing in this game is it’s incredible realism. The guns (except the minigun that should’t even be there anyway) and graphics and everything. However the final game is not going to be realistic since it is crowded with all kinds of monsters and such. Maybe someone can “produce” an nice mod for the final game, just to leave out all this non-realistic stuff. That would be perfect!

  20. Says:

I have strange problems with my ATI Rage 128 card, if I start a game the screen is blue and i can’t see anything of the map. However the weapon and the hud is displayed normaly.

I use XFree86 4.1, DRI works, and I have the package including the media files

  21. Says:

I have geforce mx/200 with the latest nvidia driver, running xfree 4 under debian sid. Wolfenstein loads allright, and the gl is fine and dandy, but when I join a game it just freezes in the loading screen when the bar is about 95% complete – it reads the disk constantly forever and ever without going any further…I can not see what it says in the console for errors.

Any ideas? Everything in the directory tree is 0777 and owned by me…

  22. Says:

ok i connect and everything to the server, and then it load
w/ the bar, and as soon as the bar is complete it returns me
to the main menu what’s going on?

  23. Says:

okay.. I cant seem to get a response from the master server.
As well, I can’t seem to get the .wav, despite the fact that I pulled chown -R {myuser} {wolfdir}. Also, when I start a server (non-ded), I get kicked out of the game (signal 11) after 1-2 minutes. Thats a little annoying.

    Opening IP socket: localhost:27960
    [snip]
Started tty console (use +set ttycon 0 to disable)
Couldn’t open streaming sound file sound/music/wolf3.wav
    trying levelshots/.TGA…
    Requesting servers from the master…
Couldn’t open streaming sound file sound/music/wolf3.wav
0 servers listed in browser with 0 players.

Thats my output. I definitely dont have anything like ipchains running, that would cut off connections from the outside. I also ran an updatedb, and I dont seem to have wolf3.wav anywhere on my system, I am thinking that could be a reason for it not being found. Any help?

  24. Says:

When I go into the Multiplayer section, it shows the label “Getting info for 0 servers (ESC to cancel)” but nothing ever happens. I can host a game, and it plays okay, so I think my setup is fine. I checked my firewall settings, and I don’t see any blocked activity.

How do I grab a list of servers to actually play against people?

  25. Bugra Says:

    I have this message:

Sys_Error: Hunk data failed to allocate 56 megs

  26. Agijsbro Says:

When in the game, it hangs when you go back to the ‘select another soldier’ (press m) window. Not always, but after some time it will eventually.

    G400, TB900, dri, glx, XFree4.1.0, 2.4.10

    Any help?

  27. theoddone33 Says:

    … means something.

  28. Says:

i cannot pick up any guns. I see the rocket and sniper rifle but i cant pick them up. also where do u get the minigun?
