Bootable Linux Games
October 25th, 2000 by CrusaderWhoops, missed this one last week: Bill Kendrick, who has produced several open source games, wrote in to Slashdot regarding a HOWTO for creating a Linux-based bootable game CD-ROM. This method of game distribution has been suggested many times over the years as one means of demonstrating how Linux’s flexibility can be applied to the problem of game configuration and installation. I’m not sure how viable it is given the diversity of PC systems (or if it might even be counterproductive to expanding the Linux game market), but its a fascinating proposal nonetheless.

The problems of PnP are not insurmountable. Infact, with a little EE it can be quite attainable. The problems with Linux on a bootable CD have more to do with driver availability than configuration management.
Take away skanky ISA hardware (like MacOS and BeOS do) and the problem is not that difficult.
