Valve Software on Linux

October 24th, 2000 by Crusader

John Clark fired in a link to a PlanetFortress IRClog where Valve Software’s Erik Johnson which makes some mention of their current Linux policies (especially after the recent exploit announcement):

<Erik> 3. Linux testing (this generally happens pretty late, since weare a Win32 house and have Leon Hartwig do the porting.

<Erik> amok – We have quite a few changes (which we’ll talk about moretomorrow). 3 new TFC maps, a bunch of CS cheat fixes, and the Linux securityissue to name three.

<Erik> mjr – We really underestimated the importance of a Linux serverwhen we first released Half-Life. Linux admins are a very important part of theserver community.

I want a Half-Life client, darnit. And no, I don’t want to use WINE. :^P

Give me the client, and I’ll run a server or three.

  2. oddo Says:

As many others, I refuse to host a game server if there is not a client.

I adopt the “No Server without a Client” policy.

I doubt I will be purchasing Team Fortress 2 (as I see it unlikely that Valve will release a non-Win32 client).

/me gets bent about the whole Valve crap. (again)[br]

This news post has nothing to do with “Linux Gaming or Linux Games at all.” As i’ve gone on rants about this before, I found that the only people who care about the HL Linux server are Win32 users, who happen to have a Linux server. They don’t use Linux on a regular basis nor care to. Ok, so I ran into one or two exceptions but.. arrrgggg..

Ok. /me shuts up and will never rant on this topic again.. :P

I did for Q3A and SOF but I will never run a Half-Life server long as I don’t see the client. I don’t mind them posting about the server software, because that is something good to know. The people at Value just don’t know how much it hurts us to know that they are not going to port games like TF2 and Half-Life. They just patch up the server software and kept going…

If you look at the people profiles on valvesofwares website, you will see that the most important people are ex-microsoft employees. I bet they still feel loyal. So I better no matter how much we complain or beg, there will be no port.

  6. bakiller Says:

Be it linuxgames.com or One of us(with more bandwith then I have) really needs to get a petition page up about only porting the server. We need to tell them how many more servers could be running and will be running if we get a port.
