August 18th, 2000 by Crusader

3dfx’s JosephKain sent in word that they’ve released new DRI-based drivers for their various Voodoo chipsets:

There are new XFree86 4.0.1 X Server/Mesa prereleases for the VoodooBanshee, Voodoo3, Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 available. These drivers shouldbe used in conjunction with XFree86 4.0 and Glide 3 with DRI support(provided). These are the drivers that were used in thedemonstrations at 3dfx’s Linux World Expo booth. They ran games suchas Quake3, Unreal Tournament (with OpenGL renderer), Soldier ofFortune and others. Note these drivers will still not work with,Myth2, Quake2 or other Glide and Mesa2x based applications but, thethe DGA mouse bug been has been fixed. Also note, these drivers arestill in early development. At this time only a single chip on theboard is supported, that means that the board will not run at its fullspeed potential, nor are Full Scene Antialiasing (FSAA) and T-BufferCinematic effects available. As development continues these featureswill be implemented in the drivers.

Changes:

  • Based on XFree86 4.0.1
  • DGA mouse support
  • No longer overwrites /etc/X11/XF86Config, however previous packages were setup to restore the saved backup of /etc/X11/XF86Config so you may want to backup the file manually before installing this package.

Please follow the instructions on the above pages to install thesepackages.
If you experience any difficulty installing any of these driver pleasedirect your questions to the USENET newsgroup 3dfx.glide.linux.
Again note that this release does NOT work with Glide applications orApplications that are linked against older revisions of Mesa.

today i installed XFree 4.0.1 my first time but , with the old Voodoo5 drivers :(,
didn’t know that knew ones where released.
Now i am going to install drivers again, the new ones.
I will see, how easy or hard it is to install new drivers
over old ones in Linux, hope it will be as easy as in windows.
If we want to have a big game market with lot of linux users, easy installing of drivers over an existing system is a must be.

Virtual Desktops do NOT work. This sucks

Does the voodoo5 support a framebuffer driver like matrox g400 and other cards? So that i can have a big friendly penguin on boot and a high-res comfortable consol.
