No Starsiege: Tribes 2 Client Port?
March 31st, 2000 by CrusaderIn yesterday’s segment(thanks Blue) ofPlanetStarsiege’sTribes 2 preview, a rather worryingstatement was made by Dynamix with regards to Linux support.Although it has been mentioned in thepast that the Tribes 2 engine has been ported to Linux, Dynamix now seems to be backing awayfrom committing to a client port in favor of releasing a dedicated server distributionsimilar to what Valve did for Half-Life. As the publisher for HL and Tribes 2 isSierra, it seems highly probable that the reticencetowards supporting Linux clients can be traced to them…

Why must Sierra be so hands-off about Linux? It makes no sense. I saw screw them and their server port…

Sure, all Linux gamers will be most delighted to
be able to donate CPU time for dedicated servers
instead of actually *playing* the game … oh, and
could you please make us *pay* for our copies of
the dedicated server? We, the delighted and ever
so thankful Linux gamers, would feel really cheap
if we could just download it, while everybody else
has to pay for that great “game” …

From the answer given to the T2 Linux question: “We’ll at least support a dedicated server for Linux.”, it doesn’t sound too bad, yet. The Unreal Tournament client, for example, is still ‘unsupported’ and although this isn’t the huge step forward that we’d like to see for Tribes 2, it’s not necessarily the huge step backwards either.
I think we should send a polite letter to Dynamix expressing our regrets that they
are uncommital about the Linux client port, maybe they just need to be reminded that there _is_ a market out there for Linux games. There _is_ one, right?

it *used* to be the game i played the most, but i finally got pissed with using win9x/nt as a gaming platform and off it goes. (used linux for my servers)
NO GAME, i mean *NO GAME* is worth the headache of this windows bullshit.
–back to playing quake 3 arena..for linux.
if tribes2 will work under wine i’ll likely play it…but this box dont reboot to windows land anymore.
sure sounds uneffective, but newbie windoz users hate reboots and lockups too…soon they will follow.

That’s the one Linux game I was looking forward to the most. Tribes is awesome, but having to use Windows to play it stinks. I’m not going to buy Tribes 2 if it doesn’t have a Linux port, as all the hassle and maintenence required to keep Windows working and to reboot to it is just too much.
