some come lately points…. 1. steam works fine on wine. 2. a LOT of linux ports of games nowdays crash to desktop, or give GLIBC too new or too old errors, making them unplayable on some distros(including major ones). 3. last but not least steam would have to make both your Linux AND windows games available, or linux users would just go back to the wine-ran windows version.

From a company that has never touched Linux in its 13-15 year time, those are big words and big promises. Billion dollar Valve has had more than it’s chance to get into Linux (they decided to do Mac OS first even). They need to walk the walk and not just talk the talk of Linux in my opinion! Cool to see, but other companies have produced Linux games/software quietly and efficiently throughout the years and not made such a big deal out of it.

Lokigames had 10-12 games ported in 2 years’ time… that’s commitment if you ask me! I bet Valve doesn’t have 1.5 year internal delays with Steam and it’s other released Windows games.

I heard from GoG that in the future they might try some Linux experiment. They didn’t sound too interested yet, and as usual their main concern was about testing the games on every possible distro.
Speaking of old games, for personal experience I can tell that some of them are so bad written that even just porting them to a modern Windows takes months of work. I guess most of the times it’s just not worth it.

There’s room for both I feel, I see Desura as more the indie market and hopefully if steam kicks on, it would become both indie + AAA titles hopefully.

I’m sitting back here quietly hoping beyond hope that the old Loki titles will eventually become available on steam, big names will more likely talk to valve about releasing old stuff.

Now we just need GoG to become more Linux friendly and try and pick up the old Loki games to sell.

That would be interesting indeed, but you forgot Nintendo, and I think they have a lot of nice games there.
As of steam, I think Linux community can’t but benefit from that. That is, unless they come up with some completely stupid ideas.
I still prefer Desura, but Steam got quite an advantage over them.

As steam goes I quite like it, I must own about 200 games on there through all their bloody sales. I’ll welcome this with open arms, especially if it means we get the source games natively.

Also, (whisper it) it’s been highlighted that if valve really are working on a ValveSteamStation (console), then at this point it would make a lot of sense for it to be running Linux and this mention about steam and source would end up working on both possibly.

the main reason we believe the above is possible is the fact that Larabel talks about how great Valve will be for Steam games soon, as long as thats not hyperbole, we might be very fortunate soon. Steam also attract bigger names and I for one would welcome a console thats not evil Microsoft nor trying-to-be-more-evil Sony.

I like the idea of Steam coming to Linux. Been some up and downs since Hopkins FBI first came out. I don’t care to run windows, but also like to play newer games. Still have a lot of the older lokigames, garagegames, id games, and so on. One of these days I should catalog all the games I have bought over the years.
