Happy Birthday id!

February 2nd, 2011 by Crusader

id Software is now 20 years old, as noted by founder and chief programmer John Carmack on Twitter.

Also, Blue’s News has an item pointing out that a graphic stating RAGE’s engine, id Tech 5, is open source is a mistake, and will be corrected soon.

What was the first id title you played? While I had seen Wolfenstein 3-D and messed with it a bit at the long-defunct US software retailer Babbage’s, it wasn’t until DOOM came out that I was hooked.

Hey, did not realize the mistake was found on their anniversary, interesting irony there…

The first id game I played was also Doom, and I played the rest mostly in order of release, with a few exceptions. I am actually probably one of the very few people my age to do so.

By the way, they have fixed the graphic. It is a shame in some ways, but I seriously doubt anyone seriously thought it was true. Let’s just hope TTimo is getting himself ready for the Linux port when the time comes.

Wolfenstein 3-D was my first id soft game too. I remember my dad telling me about this new 3D game and all I could think was ‘oh great another dancing line vector sim’ but I was really happy to be wrong about that.

I’m pretty sure my first id game was one of the Command Keen games (though, it may not count, since I think they were technically Apogee games, even though id created them)… Then, of course, Wolf3D blew my mind, and after that Doom shattered it even further… But, my strongest memories are of Quake… That first time playing qtest multiplayer over the Net is seared into my mind for eternity…

BTW, just because they corrected the mistake of calling it an open source engine right from the start, doesn’t mean they won’t open source it eventually, like they’ve always done in the past… I’m pretty sure Carmack has already confirmed they plan to open source it eventually…

Yeah, Doom was the first one for me. Carmack rocks BTW for open sourcing their engines.

Cosmo’s Cosmic Adventures!!!! I think that’s when they were still working at Apogee.

After seeing a print ad in some magazine for a free shareware download of the first episode I did exactly that. From what I remember, I downloaded the software from Apogee’s BBS on to a loaner laptop from my Pop’s work.

I remember being surprised at how well the download and install went as this may have been my first time getting full-fledged software in this fashion.

It has been awesomeness from then on.

    …Wolfenstein 3D

Actually drig, Cosmo was created by the same people who made Duke Nukem 1 and 2, kind as an intermediary between the two in fact. It was based on the Keen engine somewhat, I believe, but id did not actually make that title. Apogee itself did.

Caiptain, erm, Commander Keen, of course!

Each game they made took the lead in starting a whole new genre of games.
I’ve been in every gaming flame war since!
