An ati 2600 these days is the very low end of the ati cards.
I haven't been able to stress a HD4890 vapor-x crossfire setup. Max load on both cards was 20% with etqw maxed.
Unigine heaven benchmark maxed does stress a single to 100%, with not-enough-fps. Then again I haven't seen that one running smooth on any platform (read: "the other" platform even on very low quality), but those cards weren't comparable.

I am currently using an ATI Radeon 3650 and as far as 3D performance goes I am more than happy with it. I use the free software drivers for most things, such as desktop use and older or less intensive games (which is mostly what I play anyway) and the Catalyst dirvers for more demanding tasks. I have not had any real perfromance problems using either of them, and as the free drives improve the situation can only get better.

It's good to finally some of the UI for this game which confirmed my suspicion that the strategy element is likely to be fairly simplistic at least compared to something like SpringRTS. The variety of units and tactics should still prove to be interesting though.
