Where in the world is Crusader?

August 25th, 2009 by Marv

With Crusader on the move to the Big Apple, you will have to suffer with me in the mean time. With that said, I am curious to what everyone is playing currently, what distribution are they currently using, and if anyone is actually using Wine. Hopefully Crusader will have a safe journey and he will return to regular news posting shortly. You think after doing this for 11 years, we would let him take a break…

Nothing – I need a new system. (AMD Athlon 3000XP is dying – I can no longer reload it* nothing will complete* – and Geforce 4 card is done) I was just going to buy a Dell so I could be sure that all the hardware would work, but now Dell is no longer selling desktops. So now I will need to go searching around to see what works and what doesn’t. I really don’t want to spend a lot of money, but want certain things.

I need a firewire card – import video into kino – should not be a big deal – one I have still works
want a nvidia card – should be fine
want flash to work – if my daughter plays on the computer it is usually flash based games, or some java.
will run ubuntu – been using Gentoo for a lot of years. sometimes gets old when you are recompiling a whole system.

Games: Heroes of Newerth, WZ2100, Sacred:Gold, WC3 (Wine)
    Distribution: Mint 7 AMD64

    - Sacred:Gold: crashes a lot, every 20 min or so, even with latest patch, with old system it would crash within 2 min of load or not for hours.
    - WC3 became unstable with all setting high and full screen with ATi and 9.7 drivers (have not tested with 9.8). With HoN I just play WC3 for Tower Defense games.

old system (got in 2004 I think):
    AMD64 2800+
    NVIDIA 5900
    1gb ram DDR

    new system (1mo old):
    AMD Phenom II X3 720
    ATi 3300 (onboard)
    4gb ram DDR3

Why did I get ATi over NVIDIA?
    - ATi is making good improvements in the closed source (1 month releases with a good change log with each release)
    - ATi has a better open source future by spec docs (main reason)
    - ATi tends to use less power from what I can tell
    - ATi makes some of the best onboard video
    - good 4770 upgrade path when I get some money (can use onboard 3300 to assist for a little boost in performance as well)
    - Newegg had like $75 off the MB+CPU combo…

It was a bit of a pain getting 9.7 drivers working, had to install distribution ATi, remove them, then install 9.7, took like 3 hours total to figure out. 9.7->9.8 was strait forward. The ATi installer is much better in my opinion… when it works. I don’t regret my decision yet.

    Speaking of Heroes of Newerth
I read on the HoN forum you can get a key here:
    http://beta.heroesofnewerth.com/H829BYwa3z/facebook.php
If that runs out or is close by the time you read this, I currently have 4 beta keys I can give out.
I don’t want to give out my email here, and don’t think other would be very interested in putting their email here either but…
    1) If you are wanting to play HoN that bad you could create a temp email, put the address here and I will send invites to the first 4
    2) admins such as Marv and Crusader (who gave me a HoN key) could forward on 4 requests to my account email if they are willing.

I’ve been playing that new game by Ubuntu called “upgrade to Jaunty Jackalope”. It’s an adventure game were you try to regain all your lost operating system functionality. I’m stuck fighting the boss gcc compiler for shared objects and to complete my library,,, Oh and there’s a lot of wine-ing with this process. After I beat the boss I’ll go back to playing the most excellent penumbra series!

This week I’ve been playing with: Savage 2, Heroes of Newerth, A Tale in the Desert, Clonk Rage, ZSnes, Zaz
I still run Debian Squeeze. Other distros are looking really nice but why change if what you have already works great?
I have wine installed but I don’t use it much since it never works right for the games I’d like it to (Sins of a Solar Empire, Settlers6, Need for Speed5).

Best of luck with the move Crusader!

HoN, Savage2, tremulous on Debian/Lenny AMD/ATI. No wine.
