Best Free Linux Games?

July 2nd, 2009 by Crusader

Reader submission time: dannystaple let us know he has compiled a list of his favorite free software games for Linux.

What do you think are the best ever free Linux games?

After playing games for years, some just seem to stand out as top choices. These are native to Linux, open source and free. Nethack in particular is over 20 years old, and still one of my favourite games. It is still being discovered by players and still in active development.

The open source games I keep coming back to are:
OpenTTD, SpringRTS, Smokin Guns, Foobillard, Crack-Attack

The free as in beer games I like the most are:
Savage 2, Puzzle Pirates, Clonk Rage

Um… just Savage 2. SpringRTS is nice too.

HoN is awfully fun though, I’m in the private beta for it. Best graphical effects native Linux has seen to date.

    Nexuiz, SpringRTS, openastromenance, quake seria.

I added Wesnoth – can’t believe I left it out. May have to look at Savage2. I have been discovering Glest. I suspect with Glest, Tremulous and Vultures Eye, I may put together another publication on the top 3D Linux games. My own personal favourites that is.
