GP2X Wiz

September 2nd, 2008 by Crusader

Gamepark Holdings has announced the upcoming release of their latest Linux-based handheld game console in the GP2X series, the GP2X Wiz. GP2X News has a brochure delineating what’s new, including official games, Flash 7 support, and a redesigned slimmer form factor.

As with its predecessors, the Wiz will use a Linux OS and have an official SDK for homebrew game/application development; you can already pre-order the system from online retailers such as Play-Asia.

Now that they include titles like “Snake on Dope” it’s bound to become a success ;) It looks way better than the previous one, but who would buy this instead of open pandora?

well, i won’t buy one _instead_ the pandora… i’ll get both… the price for the new wiz is really affordable, so now i can place one for longer toilet sessions, and one in the living room – entertainment everywhere ;)

Uses the MagicEyes Pollux SOC board, ARM9 533MHz, OpenGL ES 1.1 3D acceleration, 64MB RAM, 1GB NAND, 2.8 inch 320×240 OLED screen. Previous GP2Xs had a 3.5 inch screen (measured diagonally) and 2.8 inch is similar to that of the Nintendo GBA.

I’m moving onto the Pandora (200 GBP / 355 USD) which is much better specced but this still looks interesting for 130 GBP / 230 USD, similar to previous models.

I’ll be getting this instead of the Pandora. This is cheaper, and I do not care for the case that Pandora is in. The Pandora is basically a SLOW EEPC with some integrated joysticks, minus an MMU – and it’s just as pricey.

I’ll have to admit that “Snake on Dope” is kind of stupid, but I really don’t care what integrated software they have. I’m looking only at the hardware. With a USB stick, this thing is pretty easy to turn into wifi device, and it wouldn’t be hard to get IP telephony working on it either.
