Top Indie Games
March 8th, 2008 by CrusaderThere’s been a sudden increase in independent game media coverage of late (particularly out of this year’s GDC); fortunately, Indiegames.com has decided to help players navigate what’s out there with a guide to their top 50 titles. Out of those, here are the ones with Linux versions available:
- Cave Story
- Darwinia
- Gish
- Varicella (you’ll need a Z-machine interpreter like Frotz or Zoom to play)
- Toribash
- N
- Penumbra: Overture
- Tumiki Fighters
- A Tale in the Desert III
- The Battle for Wesnoth
- Galatea (another interactive fiction game that needs Frotz or Zoom)
- Dungeon Crawl (you’ll probably want the tiled version)
- Deadly Rooms of Death
- Professor Fizzwizzle
- Lugaru
Do you have any favorites that weren’t mentioned?

Defcon and Uplink were also linked in their article, but I think they deserved at least a paragraph of their own.
As far as what’s upcoming, I’m looking forward to Savage 2 (that is indie no?), Penumbra: Black Plague, and World of Goo.

For anyone that has not tried Lugaru, I highly recommend it. This is an older game that looks a bit rough around the edges, but it has really fantastic, innovative gameplay and things like ragdoll physics and motion blur seem quite advanced for its time. Also, because of the combat system and gameplay strategies (stealth or outright assault), this game has great replayability.

Agreed about Lugaru. I bought it years ago and still love it.

I’m also waiting on Savage 2 and World of Goo (pre-ordered both).
