LGP’s New Installer
Phoronix has a brief article up previewing Linux Game Publishing’s new installer:
This new LGP installer is written to (finally) use the GTK2 toolkit, if it’s available on the target system, but there is fallback support for GTK1 and ncurses. With that said, this installer does look better than earlier builds.
The installer will be utilized in their next title, a Linux port of the space combat and trading sim X3: Reunion.

I would like the installers to have an option to install as. It would be great to just click on the icon, install as root (system wide access), have the permissions set for say a gamer group, and all the menus added for all users.
what do you think?

Thats not a bad idea. Making it platform independant though, with the different ‘root access systems’ that different distros have would be entertaining to say the least.
We’ve changed it already so that menus are added for all users if installed as root, so that bit is done.

I am wondering what would be the advantage of LGP’s installer versus loki’s installer and autopackage. Because I don’t see much advantages.

hylk0r: It’s gtk 2.0 based.
Mr Simms. Why not use Mojo Setup?
Mr Simms: Will this installer be open source as the networking library you made?

The LGP installer is basically the Loki installer which has GTK+2 support hacked in for a long time, LGP just preferred GTK+ before, nothing new here but you can read more about it in the Phoronix forum discussion.
